Saturday, January 16 the men's hockey team played their first game of the second half at home against the Concordia Thunder and lost 8-2.
The Griffins came out strong, poised and well prepared for the Thunder, who are currently in third place. The Griffins were the first to score as number 44 Drew Coles found the back of the net, assisted by Andrew Green and Dave McIvor, 10 minutes in. Shortly after this the Griffins had an excellent five minute penalty kill, two minutes of which were a two-man disadvantage. Unfortunately this was the last time MacEwan would see a lead in the game. As soon as the penalty was over, Concordia answered Coles' goal back and the period ended tied at one apiece.
The second period was extremely difficult for the Griffins as they soon faced a different kind of battle. A little over five minutes into the period Concordia scored again, which was followed by two more goals back to back which were short-handed. These swift goals rattled MacEwan's confidence, allowing Concordia to have the upper hand. Things quickly changed and the real game became that of a mental challenge for the Griffins. Concordia scored four more goals, three of which were short-handed.
The Griffins regained themselves for the third, showing maturity as they brushed off the last periods' wounds. They played much the same as the first period, holding off the Thunder the entire period. Second year Coles stepped up to the plate again, with assistance from Shawn King and Dexter Hamilton, scoring with under four minutes remaining.
Drew Coles was named the Hudson's Player of the Game for scoring both goals of the night for the Griffins.
The MacEwan Men's Hockey team is at it again this coming weekend January 22 and 23 as they face off against NAIT. The puck drops on home ice at 7:45 pm Saturday evening.
