On Saturday, December 5 the MacEwan men's hockey team beat the Portage Voyageurs, but were then defeated the following day by the SAIT Trojans.
Saturday's game opened up the way the Griffins like with a goal by Gerrit Weller, assisted by Karl Weber and Rene Tessier. Just under eight minutes into the second period came another MacEwan goal scored by Caleb Georgetti, assisted by Scotty Traverse and Torin Brusven. The Voyageurs answered back shortly after with their first goal of the game.
Many scoring opportunities arose in the third period and both teams capitalized. Only four minutes in, Assistant Captains teamed up and Mike Fiorillo found the back of the net with help from Jordan Stevenson. Halfway through the period Portage scored once more, only to be followed up once again by the Griffins triage. Fiorillo scored for a second time of the night with help from Stevenson and team Captain Tyler Hennessey. With seconds remaining, Portage scored once more but this last goal was not enough to catch the Griffins.
The game had few penalties as Portage had five in total and MacEwan only one. Total shots on goal for the evening were the same for both teams. For the fourth time this half, Hudson's Player of the Game went to centre Mike Fiorillo for scoring twice in the evening.
The Griffins had a quick turnaround as the following morning they were on the road down to Calgary to play the postponed November 27 game against SAIT. The Griffins were not up to the always difficult challenge of the SAIT Trojans and lost eleven goals to one. Dexter Hamilton scored the goal of the game, assisted by Rene Tessier and Dave McIvor.
Despite the loss, the Griffins had nearly the same amount of shots as the Trojans, even out-shooting them in the second period. Penalty minutes were one-sided as SAIT racked up 22 and MacEwan had six.
The Griffins head into the break with a record of four wins and thirteen losses. Their first game back into action at home will be on January 16 at 8:45 pm against the Concordia Thunder.
