The Griffins women's hockey team travelled down to Red Deer to take on the 5th place Red Deer Queens. The Griffins won the first two games in a defensive battle between the two teams and this one promised much of the same.
Shauntelle Williams got the start in net for the Griffins and was coming off a fantastic game against the NAIT OOKS in a 1-1 tie. Kendra Lakeman got the start in net for Red Deer.
The first period started off with the Griffins controlling much of the play and generating strong forecheck pressure on the Queens defense. This resulted in good scoring chances, which were turned away by Lakeman. The period also saw the referee becoming an effect on the game flow as she called 6 penalties in the period, four against the Griffins. With the constant parade to the penalty box, the Griffins penalty kill units got a good workout and did not allow any goals by the Queens powerplay unit. In fact, it was the Griffins powerplay unit who scored as Ashley Holt scored from Jayden Skoye at 3:19 of the first period. That is how the first period ended with the Queens outshooting the Griffins 14-9 due to the numerous powerplay opportunities.
The second period saw no scoring but another eight penalties being called, this time with Red Deer taking five of them. With so many penalties, the special teams on both teams got a lot of work and this took away from the normal fast pace used by both teams. The second period ended 1-0 in favour of the Griffins with the Griffins enjoying a 10-7 shot advantage due to the powerplays.
The start of the third period saw the Griffins try to get back to their normal fast paced and aggressive style. Red Deer was equal to the challenge and generated scoring chances of their own. However, Williams would have nothing of that and turned them away whenever the opportunity arose. Five more penalties were called in the period, with Red Deer taking three of them. With about a minute left, the Queens pulled their goalie and tried to work the puck to the net but were called for a tripping penalty at 19:42, killing their momentum. The game ended in a 1-0 victory for the Griffins with Red Deer outshooting Grant MacEwan 7-6 in the period and 28-25 overall.
Shauntelle Williams was named the Griffins game star earning her first ACAC shutout and putting on a great performance in net.
